Uniting Local Governments for Climate Action

ICLEI Oceania, in collaboration with the Global Covenant of Mayors, is scheduled to host the upcoming Mayors’ Climate Action for Australian Council of Local Government Forum. This highly anticipated event, scheduled for the 30th of May, aims to bring together key stakeholders and decision-makers to address the pressing challenges of climate change and chart a sustainable path forward for local governments throughout Australia.

The upcoming Mayors' Forum will prioritize three key objectives, previously identified as high-level "asks," which will be translated into tangible deliverables for effective implementation and future budget proposals within the Australian Council of Local Government.

These aims include:

Establishing a comprehensive climate policy framework

The Forum will explore the integration of all levels of government in developing a robust policy framework that recognizes the valuable contributions of local governments to the Australian Nationally Determined Contributions. By aligning efforts, we can create a unified approach and respond urgently to threats of climate change already gripping our cities.

Forging effective partnerships between local governments and the Federal Government

A key outcome of the Forum will be the development of an accord that defines shared objectives for climate mitigation, adaptation, and resilience across all tiers of government. By fostering strong partnerships, we can leverage resources and expertise to address climate challenges effectively.

Allocating resources for resilience and emissions mitigation

Recognizing the urgent need for action, the forum will emphasize the importance of securing appropriate resources to implement well-defined initiatives that enhance resilience and reduce emissions. By investing in these actions, local governments can protect their communities and build a sustainable future.

The Forum will also validate a Mayoral Statement, which will be presented at the Australian Local Government Association (ALGA) meeting later this year. This statement will serve as a unified voice of local governments, reinforcing the urgency of climate action and calling for continued support and collaboration from all stakeholders.

The outcomes of the Mayors’ Climate Action for Australian Council of Local Government Forum have the potential to have a lasting impact on local governments throughout Australia and by achieving these aims, we can pave the way for stronger climate policies, effective partnerships, and increased resources to protect our communities and build a sustainable future.

Mayors, deputy mayors, and representatives from local governments, alongside influential support groups such as Better Futures Australia, Climate Emergency Australia, Cities Power Partnership, C40 Cities, and Climateworks, will convene at the Forum to shape the future of climate action.
