West Torrens is a vibrant area, located between the Adelaide business district and the sea, southwest of our state's capital. Our Council seeks to ensure that the environment, businesses and industries across the Western Adelaide region remain productive and that our communities stay connected and strong to respond positively to the challenges and opportunities presented by a changing climate.

West Torrens is home to more than 60,000 residents, as well as key state infrastructure industries including schools, hospitals, recreational facilities and our state's principal airport for domestic and international flights and freight. It is this diverse combination of industries that creates a unique set of challenges when it comes to responding to climate change.

With a focus on adaptation, the City of West Torrens has already started a robust program in collaboration with its council partners in the western region and is looking forward to further boosting climate adaptation outcomes through participation in the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy.

The Council's Mayor, Michael Coxon, is a strong advocate for investigating and implementing climate change programs across West Torrens. He recognises the value of connecting people and partnering with others to seek innovative solutions to the various complex issues that impact the unique West Torrens' community.

"Our city is home to a very diverse population, especially in terms of culture, and as such we have a very important role to play to ensure that we can effectively communicate our message with as many of our residents and businesses as possible about the importance of climate change resilience," Mayor Coxon said.

"This is an issue that not only affects us now, but has a huge impact on our future generations, and while it's everyone's responsibility to do what they can, our Council's job is to lead our local community and help bring people together in order to create a cohesive community that works together to address the challenges of adapting to ‘Climate Change’.

"Being part of the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy Program is just one of many steps that we are taking to show that we're committed to this cause. We are pleased to be one of the latest signatories and look forward to the future."
