Methods & Processes for Preparing GPC Municipal Emissions Inventories – Presentation

Activity Calculation Methods – Presentation

Objectives:

  • To build understanding of the role and importance of inventory management and QA/QC processes in the development of high quality inventories

  • To build understanding of regional GPC inventories including benefits, boundary setting, materiality assessments, calculation methodologies and data sources

This workshop was intended to provide local government practitioners with a deeper understanding of GPC, and built on the topics from Workshop 1 in more detail. For example:

  • Understanding municipal boundaries and implications for your council or region

  • Understanding, in increasing detail, what is involved in your inventory

  • Targets and program design

  • Aggregated and downscaled data issues and opportunities

  • Integrating corporate emissions inventories and other programs (NCOS, NGERS)

  • Using CIRIS (the City Inventory Reporting and Information System)

  • Step through data sources in more details for each emission source

  • Onboarding new data sets into the future

  • Using peer-to-peer resources for ongoing skill development and collaboration

  • How to effectively collaborate, using international examples

Technical Workshop

This part of the workshop provided much greater detail about conducting a GPC inventory. For example:

  • More detailed discussion on methods

  • Discussion on the relative strengths and weaknesses of each method

  • Finding local data

  • Using geospatial information (GIS)

  • Making corrections to old information

  • Materiality assessments

  • Common errors, assumptions and considerations

  • How to find and remedy errors

  • How to track anomalies and unusual results based on multiple methodologies

  • Using technical working groups and forums for issue resolution, and how to communicate with international verification bodies

  • Collaboration – next steps discussion
