Talking In This Climate is a new podcast series that follows six millennials as they go on a shared and often hilarious journey to become better communicators of climate and environmental issues.

With no prior experience in podcasting, and recorded through several gruelling months of lock down in Victoria, Australia, the team have managed to pull together a diverse array of episodes on climate communication.

The series explores climate language, metaphors, framing, trust, emotion and misinformation, and is dedicated to empowering listeners with greater mindfulness about the way they communicate climate change and environmental issues.

What the podcast draws our attention to is how we talk about climate change has powerful material effects on the success or failure of our responses to climate change and other environmental issues. In other words, people need to reclaim their agency over the words that they use not just in their day-to-day but in professional circumstances too.

Each episode explores a different theme about climate communication. The first episode considers how seemingly common terms in climate language such as climate adaptation can be limiting in the way we understand environmental issues.

In later episodes, the group discusses balancing emotions of fear and hope, so we can optimise our messages to empower people to take action, rather than leaving them in a state of overwhelm.

There are no shortcuts on this journey. This is not a ‘how to guide’ or a self-development show. As you will hear, the topics discussed are challenging and the discussions demonstrate why talking about climate can be such a polarising and pernicious topic.
