ICLEI celebrates grand opening of ICLEI Pacific Islands Office in Suva
Suva, Fiji – August 6, 2025 – ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, a global network dedicated to supporting sustainable urban development, proudly announces the official opening of its new ICLEI Pacific Islands Office in Suva. The ribbon-cutting ceremony, held at the Greenhouse Coworking space, marks a significant milestone for the organisation's growing commitment to the Pacific region and its efforts to enhance climate resilience.
The new office, a satellite office of ICLEI Oceania, will serve as a central hub for advancing ICLEI’s initiatives, which focus on enhancing sustainability, strengthening climate resilience, and promoting environmental stewardship across Pacific Island nations. With key programs already underway in countries such as Fiji, Kiribati and the Solomon Islands, the ICLEI Pacific Islands Office will support the continued development and expansion of these initiatives, while fostering deeper partnerships with local governments, NGOs and other stakeholders.
Cutting the ribbon is Acting CEO & Special Administrator Chairman – Mr. Tevita Boseiwaqa, assisted by Rajneesh Charan, ICLEI Oceania Board Member.
Luigi Zarro, Manager, Operations at ICLEI Oceania, remarked:
"The opening of the ICLEI Pacific Islands Office is a pivotal moment for us. It allows us to deepen our engagement with local communities and expand the scope of our existing projects, including the IKI Blue-Green Development in Kiribati project and sustainable water infrastructure work in Fiji. We’re excited to build new partnerships with other NGOs, regional bodies and local governments to accelerate sustainability efforts and create lasting change across the Pacific region."
Through its collaborative efforts in the region, ICLEI has already made significant strides in climate adaptation strategies and nature-based solutions. The new office will further leverage unique ICLEI initiatives, such as the Transformative Actions Program (TAP), to amplify its impact in the region.
The establishment of the ICLEI Pacific Islands Office is a testament to ICLEI’s long-standing commitment to fostering regional cooperation and its support for Pacific nations in strengthening partnerships and collaborative governance. As momentum builds for a joint COP hosted by Australia and the Pacific, ICLEI’s role as the Local Governments and Municipal Authorities (LGMA) focal point at COP will be further reinforced by this exciting new presence in the Pacific.
