CitiesWithNature: From Global Framework to Local Action
In a webinar held on 28th June, Australian councils were provided with valuable insights on applying the recently adopted Global Biodiversity Framework from the Biodiversity COP15 in Montreal. The event proved to be a resounding success, engaging local government practitioners in the environmental field and equipping them with the knowledge to navigate the new framework effectively.
One of the webinar's highlights was a compelling presentation by Chris Butcher Senior Sustainability Advisor of Biodiversity at the City of Adelaide, who showcased their ongoing programs designed to enhance biodiversity and restore urban ecosystems. Attendees gained firsthand insights into successful initiatives already in practice, inspiring them to take similar action within their own communities.
The webinar also featured Cr. Amanda Stone, ICLEI Oceania’s Regional Executive Chair and member of ICLEI’s Global Executive Committee discussed the most relevant targets within the new Framework for local governments. Her perspective shed light on the crucial role that councils play in biodiversity conservation and the steps they can take to make a meaningful impact.
Another highlight from the webinar included Dr Amy Hahs, the School of Agriculture, Food and Ecosystem Sciences (SAFES) Director for Culture, Diversity & Inclusion and a Senior Lecturer in Urban Horticulture from the University of Melbourne. Amy shared updates on their ongoing research into biodiversity measurement and reporting. Their studies promise to provide valuable insights and tools for local governments striving to effectively monitor and report on their biodiversity efforts.
The event was not only an educational experience but also marked a significant milestone in the CitiesWithNature journey. The Founder Councils cohort for the CitiesWithNature Academy was officially announced during the webinar which included, the City of Newcastle, the City of Adelaide, the City of Stonnington, the City of Yarra, the City of Unley, the City of Hobart, the City of Mundaring, the City of Monash, and the City of Whittlesea. These leader councils will collaborate closely with ICLEI Oceania throughout this year to co-design the initial package of modules and resources for the Academy. The anticipated expansion of the Academy will include additional councils in 2024 and highlights the growing momentum and recognition of the program's transformative potential.
As the CitiesWithNature initiative accelerates, local government practitioners in the environmental field have a unique opportunity to spearhead biodiversity conservation efforts. By harnessing the knowledge and resources offered by the CitiesWithNature Academy, practitioners can strengthen their capacity to implement nature-based solutions, enhance urban ecosystems, and lead their communities towards a sustainable and resilient future.
